When can I offer drinks in an open cup?

Learning to drink from an open cup can help develop motor skills and prevent tooth decay.

  • Talk to parents about offering drinks in an open cup.
  • Around 6 months of age, children can be offered small amounts (30-60 mL) of water, breastmilk, 3.25% milk, or an appropriate infant formula in an open cup.
  • Between 6 to 14 months of age, encourage children to use an open cup more often.
  • After 14 months of age, encourage children to drink with an open cup.
